Monuments / Lecce (LE)

Just a few meters from the Arco di Trionfo and Viale degli studenti at the center, the obelisk of Lecce was designed by Luigi Cipolla and built in 1822 by sculptor Vito Carluccio, in honor of Ferdinando I di Borbone.
The Obelisk is decorated on the four facades with some figures in bas-relief, including the dolphin biting the Turkish crescent, symbolizing the victory over the turks. A curious episode concerns the obelisk: bourbon propaganda painted it black in order to make it look like a marble obelisk, but the first rain wiped out all traces of color.
