Coastal Watchtowers
Coastal Watchtowers / Torre San Giovanni - Ugento (LE)

San Giovanni tower

The tower is the oldest site of the entire village. Commissioned by Charles V in the 16th century as a site of defense against the Saracens, lies on a small promontory that juts into the sea. It is currently owned by the Navy as it is home of the Coast Guard. At its feet, every year at Christmas, there is an unusual nativity scene. During the summer instead, in the square below it, there are various celebrations that characterize the summer in Ugento, in particular the Emigrant's Day (usually the first week of August).
